These impressive wagons were built by Bombardier/Prorail of Wakefield in 1998 and designed to carry spent nuclear fuel from Royal Navy nuclear submarines from their bases at Devonport and Rosyth to Sellafield for disposal and typically ran with double headed Class 37/6 locomotives (also available from Accurascale here)

The paint had weathered well but by 2024 it was looking rather work worn and as such became the first 73/9 to re-enter the paint shop

ODA - Railfreight Red/Grey - Triple Pack C EWS On larger model railwaysIn the early 1980s, British Rail's shift to an air braked network created logistical challenges for the Ministry of Defence (MoD), whose depot sidings had sharp curves that could not accommodate newer, long wheelbase wagons. To solve this, 50 vacuum braked, 12 foot wheelbase "Pipe" wagons (built in 1961 under Lot 3335 to Diagram 1 462) were selected for conversion. Their drop sides were ideal for palletised loads.
